MARE AUSTRALIS is an expedition cruise ship that sails through The Strait of Magellan and Beagle Channel, exploring one of the most beautiful and pristine places in the world like Patagonia and Tierra del Fuego located in the southernmost land of the continent. It is a trip through Channels, Bays, Glaciers, Snow Mountains and Forests never been explored before.
Day 1: Saturday / Punta Arenas
Check-in /Departure from Prat Pier to our final destination, the end of the world, sailing through the mythical Strait of Magellan, Patagonian Channels and Tierra del Fuego. This is the beginning of a great adventure.
Day 2: Sunday / Ainsworth Bay - Marinelli Glacier - Tucker Islet
Navigation through Almirantazgo Fjord to Marinelli Glacier surroundings in Ainsworth Bay, there is a pleasant walk to see a beaver dam, Magellan Forest and an elephant seal colony. In Tucker Islet, we will visit a small colony of Magellan Penguins. It is likely to observe dolphins, on the other side of this Islet, there is a big colony of Cormorants, and approximately 15 minutes later, a rocky headland with a significant Sea Lion Colony.
Day 3: Monday/D'Agostini Fjord-Serrano Glacier-D´Agostini Glacier and Cóndor Bay
The dawn meets us by D'Agostini Fjord and Serrano Glacier. We will disembark in Cóndor Bay so as to admire Cóndor Glacier beauty. We will have a short walk and an excursion by boats, waiting to see astonishing ice portions falling down. Later on, the ship will sail through Magdalena and Cockburn channels towards Brecknock channel.
Day 4: Tuesday/ Beagle Channel, Yendegaia and Puerto Williams
We will sail through Desolada Bay, O´Brian channels and through Norwest branch of Beagle Channel, to appreciate the marvellous "Glacier Alley": Spain, Romansh, Germany, Italy, France, and Holland. We will disembark in Yendegaia Bay, where we can see the first Estancia (Patagonian Ranch) built in the Chilean part of Tierra del Fuego. We will observe shell remain sites inhabited once by Yagan indigenous people. We will visit the area of this old Estancia and walk to a viewpoint, where it is possible to see great variety of vegetation, the most representative of Tierra del Fuego Island. You will see plenty of birds, such as Caiquenes and, occasionally, Condors. In the afternoon, we will land at Puerto Williams, the southernmost city in the world, where we can take optional tours and visit places as Martín Gusinde Museum and the beavers Lake, or the astonishing flight over Cape Horn.
Day 5 : Wednesday / Ushuaia - Argentina
The most important Argentinean City of Tierra del Fuego island. In this place, you can enjoy optional tours , which will let you know more about the southern area of South America such as Tierra del Fuego National Park. Passengers who take the trip Punta Arenas - Ushuaia, will disembark, and those who take the trip Ushuaia - Punta Arenas will board the ship from 16.00 hrs. to 17.00 hrs.
Day 6 : Thursday / Cape Horn - Wulaia Bay
Navigation through The Beagle Channel and Murray Channel to disembark at Cape Horn National Park, a promontory, almost vertical, of 425 metres high. A Holland trading expedition organised by Isaac Le Maire and leaded by Captain Willem Schouten in September 30th 1616 discovered it. The origin of its name comes from The Hoorn Port where the expedition departed in June 14 th 1615. After that, we will disembark at Wulaia Bay, one of the largest historical indigenous settlements in this area.
Day 7 : Friday / Pía Glacier - Garibaldi Glacier
We will sail back through the main branch of Beagle Channel and appreciate Pïa Glacier, which is immersed in Darwin Cordillera and reaches Pïa Bay waters. We will get into Garibaldi Inlet so as to observe this Glacier and extraordinary icefalls on Darwin Cordillera. On the shores of this Inlet, the ship stops to admire Sea Lions closely. We will disembark in Zodiac boats at one of the beaches in this protected and wonderful place. It is an adventurous excursion, where we can appreciate the area´s vegetation and pristine forests covering the mountain slopes. After this unforgettable experience, we will sail back through O´Brian and Ballenero Channels, Desolada Bay, Aguirre Passage and Brecknock. At dawn, we will sail through Gabriel Channel, Mare Australis exclusive route, and disembark on Brookes Glacier, where we will have a delicious whisky with millennial ice. The astonishing colours and unique ice reflections will surprise us. An excursion to one of the glaciers will allow us to see this amazing ice mass, from a very close and safe distance, not more than 100 metres.
DAY 8 : Saturday / Magdalena Island-Punta Arenas
Early in the morning, we will visit Magdalena Island, home of an enormous penguin colony, with more than 120.000 specimens in different stages of their lifetime. We will have a walk to San Isidro Lighthouse, which was used to guide sailor expeditions on their way through The Strait of Magellan. We will be back at Punta Arenas at 11:00 a.m. and disembarking procedures begin. This is the end of great adventure.
